European Capital of Culture

On the occasion of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 “Essen for the Ruhr” the 22nd European Film Awards 2009 took place in Germany’s Ruhr area, a metropolitan region with 53 cities and around 5.3 million people right in the heart of Europe.

The European Film Fest RUHR was organised by Christine von Fragstein and her team in the week before the European Film Awards Ceremony in nine cinemas in the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010. The programme featured 25 films nominated for the 22nd European Film Awards by more than 2,000 members of the European Film Academy. The Film Fest offered the audiences in the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 an insight into the quality and variety of European cinema. In addition, a number of filmmakers and actors came to the Ruhr region in person to meet their audiences in the cinemas. The 22nd European Film Awards 2009 were presented by the European Film Academy and EFA Productions with the support of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 “Essen for the Ruhr”, the Minister President and the Minister for Federal and European Affairs and the Media of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the Filmstiftung NRW.
